Private wilderness journeys by Jay Jansen
Private wilderness trips in southern Norway for one to four people. For anyone with a calendar booked months ahead and a phone that never goes off. Five days in the wilderness with guide Jay Jansen.
Setesdal, southern Norway · May to October · one to four people
Who it’s for
Plenty of responsibility. Hardly a moment when nobody needs something from you.
In the wilderness, there’s no route laid out for you, and you’ll hardly meet anyone.
You carry your own gear, pick your campsite and light your own fire. Jay guides you, but you do as much as you can yourself. After a few days the silence feels normal and the noise fades. You don’t need to be a seasoned outdoor type; decent basic fitness and a willingness to spend several days outside in changeable weather are enough.
First, a day together in the Netherlands
Once you’ve paid your deposit, we start with a full day outdoors together in the Netherlands. Jay gets to know you and sees how you handle yourself outside; you get to see how he works. He uses that day to set how demanding the trip will be. The route itself is decided by the weather.
The trip
Travel through wild terrain, navigate and change your route when the terrain or weather calls for it.
Find a good spot, pitch your tent, collect firewood, make a fire, boil water and cook your food.
No phone. No packed schedule. Time for a good conversation, or simply some silence.
Your guide
Along the way, you’ll learn how to use a map and compass, choose a good place to camp, pitch your tent properly, fish for trout, make fire and deal with rain, wind and difficult ground. I’m there to guide you, but you do as much as possible yourself. That’s a big part of the experience.
While walking, or later around the fire, conversation often happens naturally. Sometimes it’s personal, sometimes practical. And sometimes there’s nothing that needs saying.
“I went into the Norwegian wilderness with my son, faced the challenges, learned survival skills and enjoyed the landscape and the quiet — all under Jay’s excellent guidance. An experience we will remember for a long time.”
Peter Klundert — travelled with his son
